Start with the house number, then the street: “88 Queen St E”, “1 Yonge”. Unit numbers are not part of the permit record, so enter the building number only.

Why not just use the City's tool

Use it for anything official. The City's Building Application Status search is the live record, with inspection results and the current state of an application, and it is the one to trust when something matters.

It also forgets. The City states that the tool holds active permits applied for within the last 10 years, and keeps a closed or cancelled permit for only about a month after it closes. A house renovated in 2009, or one whose permits were signed off last year, looks untouched there.

This page is built from the City's published permit data instead, active and cleared together, so the history stays: 993,479 permits back to 2000. That is the difference. For what is happening now, the City. For what has happened here, this.

What this can and cannot tell you

An open permit is one the City has issued and not yet closed. It matters when buying: the obligation to finish the work and pass inspection follows the property, not the person who took the permit out. This tool shows what is on file, which is not the same as what was built. Work done without a permit leaves no record at all.
